How to take your first steps in tennis

Getting started with tennis is easier than you think! 🎾 The right racket, comfy shoes, and a few simple tips — and you’re already on the court, enjoying every swing!
We’ve put together some helpful advice for beginners. Scroll down to see what to keep in mind when starting out.
Choosing the right racket and balls
For beginners, lightweight rackets with a larger string surface offer better control. Softer, low-bounce balls make the game easier to handle and help you adapt faster.
Getting ready for the court
Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers that provide good support. Learn the basics — how scoring works, how to serve, and how to alternate hits. This will make your first game more fun and less confusing!
Starting your training
It’s best to begin with a coach — they’ll help you learn proper technique, avoid mistakes, and reduce the risk of injury. You can practice on your own, but with a coach, progress will come quicker.
Where and who to play tennis with
Look for tennis courts in your area. You can start with a friend or join a group class — it’s always more fun to play together.
Staying motivated
Set small, achievable goals — like hitting 10 shots in a row or landing a perfect serve. Play with people who support you, and most importantly, enjoy the game!
